Hugo's

Hugo's Bar

Upon arrival to our hotel in Fayetteville, everyone began complaining how hungry we were and we decided to get some lunch before heading over to our friend’s wedding reception. I asked the desk clerk where we could find some good lunch and he directed us to several restaurants in the vicinity. We chose to eat at Hugo’s because it was within walking distance.

One block away, we followed the stairs down into the basement restaurant. It was bustling with people in an otherwise quiet area downtown. We waited a few minutes with the rest of the crowd before we were seated. I enjoyed looking at the multicultural junk that was plastered on the walls behind the bar area and throughout the rest of the restaurant.

Once we sat down we ordered some chips and salsa to tide us over until our food arrived. I ordered a catfish po’boy with fries. It was delicious!! The fries were real potatoes cut about ¼” and fried until they were crunchy; just the way I like them! The po’boy was served on a 6” toasted French roll with lettuce, tomato, onion, and tarter sauce. I wasn’t sure how I’d like the tarter sauce as I rarely use it normally, but it really made the sandwich. It was crisp, crunchy, and the tarter sauce provided a certain little zing that I found hard to resist.

Even though we were already full, we couldn’t resist sharing a desert; two crepes stuffed and topped with mint chocolate chip ice cream. Again, I’m not a fan of mint anything, however this was one of the best deserts I’ve had since I can remember. Far better than the Banana’s Foster at Landry’s Restaurant in Branson, Missouri.

Despite the fact that Jer and I do not drink and avoid the "bar" atmosphere at all costs, Hugo’s was a pleasant surprise and very easy on the wallet. Feel free to browse Hugo’s menu here, or visit them at 25 1/2 North Block, Fayetteville, AR 72701, Downtown/Dickson Street, 479-521-7585.
