The other morning at the gym I had an interesting run in with what I assume to be a local college student. It really wasn't a big deal, but it really made me stop and think about how people act these days.
Basically, this little "incident" happened around 5am as I was just walking into the gym. College Boy pushed his way past me, opened the door and walked in letting it slam in my face. I thought that maybe he didn't realize what he did and pulled open the door. Just as I walked in he barreled through the next door, which also nearly took my nose off.
I wasn't upset because this guy didn't hold the door open for me, a woman. It was just plain rude to not hold doors open. We are, after all, Southwest
Okay, so maybe you don't have to open the door and politely wait while the other person walks through. But you can at least hold the door until the other person can grab it. Heck, I would have even jogged a few steps to grab the door if he'd let me. Actually, I wasn't far enough away to have to run... he just didn't care that I was right there.
So this little incident wasn't that big of a deal in the long run. In fact, I nearly forgot all about it until I saw this guy again this morning. He was standing near the machines talking to a friend. I happened to catch him talking about how he had a date with a girl and now she won't call him back or talk to him.
My mind flashed back to that early morning and I considered recommending a class in chivalry, but just smiled and let it go.
In an effort to keep humanity civil, consider being just a little more polite today.
